Ponies in the Park

Good news.

I'm in the last stages of contract negotiations with Terra Nova National Park to use my two Newfoundland Ponies in the park this winter to help clean up one of their campsites from the damage caused by hurricane Igor this past fall.

Work will begin hopefully before the snow settles in and I'll be in the park with the horses for various visitor events over the winter as required.

This will a first in Newfoundland, and perhaps in Canada. Horses have not been used to work in the woods of this park for almost three generations. From what I can gather, the last horses were used by my great-grandfather King in Minchin's Cove prior to their logging operation shutting down in the late 40's.

This project has potential to educate people about the plight of the pony and bring the Endangered Newfoundland Pony to the forefront of Newfoundland's burgeoning tourism sector. Perhaps it could even help return the plight of the pony to the forefront of "Intangible Cultural Heritage" discussions currently circulating. Gonna give it a try anyway!!

Backpacker, Traveller & Kayaker Hostel

Come help us build our super cool hostel. We'll be putting up a straw-bale insulated metal sheeted barn in the near future. We would love to have fun people around to share the work with.

Explore Terra Nova National Park and the surrounding area, get acquainted with straw-bale construction and basic timber framing techniques and help build the trail into the park as well.

Lots to do around our affiliated Organic Farm (also lots of good food around right now yoo).  Visit the farms blog to see what's on the go over there www.eastportorganics.blogspot.com.

Beautiful Terra Nova National Park

Come see the beautiful landscape of  Terra Nova National Park with one of our qualified outdoor guides. Enjoy sailing, horseback riding, kayaking, hiking, skiing or just walking through the local communities.

Stay in comfort. The surrounding communities have many choices from bare bones to 4 star. We recommend either The Fisher's Loft, or Pine Tree Lodge for more comfortable accommodations. You can choose to dine on the areas finest foods fresh from the ocean and land (with prior arrangements).

The Eastport Marine Protected Area is Canada's first marine protected area and provides sustainably harvested lobster in season, and the surrounding ocean provides fresh seafood pretty much year round.

Eastport Organics, our associated organic farm can supply all the delicious treats you'll need for snacks and hearty meals at any point on your journey through the area. There are also opportunities to have local lamb, beef, chicken and moose on your plate when in season.
